Ever thought of visiting North Korea? What about Afghanistan? Chances are, these are the some of last places you would think of visiting on a vacation. However, I would encourage you not to be so quick to judge. This slightly old (2012) article provides some insight on why you should consider visiting 10 different "taboo" destinations. As the poster made very clear, you should always check with the U.S. Department of State for warnings before planning such a trip, provided you live in the U.S. Also, it probably isn't a good idea to choose one of these destinations if you haven't got a decent amount of travelling experience or if you don't feel comfortable with the potential risks involved. Personally, these trips make me feel a little wary, but I can't help but be fascinated with the idea of experiencing the culture first-hand. Definitely be safe when you travel and take every precaution necessary, but don't let fear stop you from experiencing the world as a whole.
