2nd Sunday of Every Month - The Rose Bowl Flea Market

Today we went to the Rose Bowl Flea Market.  We had planned on going very early, but ended up going in with the 9AM crowd.  It was a cloudy, cool day, but eventually turned into an extremely, hot, muggy day.  The clouds of the morning lent to the beauty of the moment as we entered the Flea Market.  A man was standing at the top of the stairs, making the most beautifully ethereal music.  He wore a kilt, boots and a British Pith Helmet!  It was astoundingly amazing and most unexpected.  I was immediately transported to the hills of Scotland.  A man stood in the distance, on a hill, playing the bag-pipes.   Chills went up and down my spine.  Good chills.  I came back to reality and saw that this man was called The Lord of the Cello.  Wow.  What a wonderful way to begin the day.

The day had already started great for me when I received 2 - $2 bills in change at the ticket booth.  I know, I get excited over the most mundane things, but I thought it was cool.  They also had 2 men on stilts.  I wanted to ask them if they ever got knocked down, but was afraid they would arrest me thinking I was threatening them.  One man was dancing and said hi to everyone.  The other man looked like how I imagined I would look on stilts.  He looked terrified.  I wonder how they get up there.  I wonder how they get down.

I had been to the Rose Bowl many, many years ago.  Apparently, the Flea Market has been going on for 45 years now, so I am assuming it was the same type of event.  I don't remember exactly, or it could have been a car show.  Anyway, we had a fun time this morning.  We saw many amazing items for sale and nice vendors.  One place that really stood out was a booth that had all types of bugs, baby chicks, a monkey head, bats, butterflies.  I said that all they need now are human heads!  And, as we neared the end of the displays, what did they have?  Shrunken heads!  I am sure they were fake.  I grabbed one of their business cards.  Their store is called Real Bugs.  Check it out, you will either be utterly disgusted or extremely excited.

Among the many other wonders we discovered, we found that G.I. Joe had a girlfriend, or at least a friend that was a girl; Mademoiselle Marie.  I was in wonder.  Wow.  All this time they had this cool action figure or doll that I could have had instead of a Barbie doll.  I can only imagine how our Barbie doll play days would have changed if Mademoiselle Marie had been a part of them!  What a cool character.  We laughed at the picture on the box of Mademoiselle Marie running with a gun wearing netted stockings and high heels.  My kind of girl, tough yet feminine.  Reminds me of those 1970's Enjoli commercials.

We did buy something while we were there.  I am munching on them right now.  I love when you go somewhere and they give you samples.  Well, the guy at the Alex's Fruits and Nuts booth won me over by not only giving me a sample of apple rings, but next some mango and then some papaya.  I mean I WAS going to get something already, but he was smart.  So, I ended up getting 3 items for $20 and saving $4.  Now I am munching on this no sugar added, best tasting dried fruit apple ring I have ever had in my life, and thin strips of dried, sliced no sugar added mango that is so tangy and reminds me of those fruit roll-up things but 10 times better.  My third item is a true treasure.  I LOVE pistachio nuts ever since I was a kid and they came in these teeny-tiny bags and they were either white or red.  I don't know what they used to cover them with, but it was pretty nasty and you ended up with either white, red or pink lips and finger tips.  Not fun, but the taste of the pistachio was definitely worth it.  My finest and most eagerly awaited third item is a container full of multi-colored pistachios.  I can't wait to try them.  I know they are gonna be good, but I am holding out until I am really super hungry, so they will be extra good.  The colors are green, reddish, orangish/yellow, and a natural pistachio color.  The label says the flavors are lemon, jalapeno, chili pepper and garlic. Mmmmm good.
